Engineer In Training Program

THE SGS ENGINEER TRAINING PROGRAM FOR YOUNG ENGINEERS

OBJECTIVES
SGS supports young engineers in their professional development and career goals. The EIT Program, while practical, remains educational in nature because it takes your cumulative experience and interests and allows them to grow through a supervised training plan. This will allow you to plan your career beyond the program by providing exposure to the core technical disciplines of grinding, mineral processing, flotation, hydrometallurgy and geometallurgical mapping, whilst at the same time developing your skills in data analysis, reporting and project management .

The objective of the EIT Program is to provide engineer-specific, on-the-job training and experience that will prepare you for professional engineer registration in the jurisdiction of your choice. Through the program, SGS will increase your competence and confidence to take on increasing levels of professional responsibility.

REQUIREMENTS
To apply to the EIT Program, you must possess a suitable undergraduate degree from a recognized university program. Program graduates will gain the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional team environment, so the ability to respond to a variety of challenges is important.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
SGS supports the concept of creating a technical development program for our engineering employees, with a program that will continue to build on the technical base you achieved at university, fostering your interests and developing your expertise. As such, SGS has developed our EIT program to supplement the technical training completed at university to allow further technical advancement through on-the-job training.

The SGS EIT Program is designed to provide entry-level engineering applicants with a thorough introduction to a wide range of metallurgical disciplines. A mentor will be assigned to support and help you through the program, at the same time you will work with more senior personnel. The program , with the knowledge passed along by our experienced staff, will help you mature professionally.

The EIT Program provides an excellent opportunity for you to become familiar with the SGS organization, while at the same time allowing the company to become familiar with you and help you develop your capabilities and experience base.

Technical Placement Opportunities
The program is designed so that capable young people like you will have the opportunity to work in a number of technical disciplines. SGS will work with you to develop a individual plan. You will be placed into a systematic rotation schedule so you can work in various technical groups and be mentored by practicing engineers. In this way, you will develop your professional job skills, your business background and your knowledge of our company. While working at SGS Minerals Services, you will be conducting metallurgical testing, flowsheet development, and in-plant services in the following areas:

  • Mineral Processing
Bench and pilot plant crushing and grinding, circuit modeling and design optimization. Dense media separation, gravity, magnetic and electrostatic separation, size classification, thickening. Flotation circuit modeling. Flocculation, reagent development, simple and complex pilot-plant testing.
  • Hydrometallurgy
Atmospheric, biological and pressure leaching. Cyanide and other lixiviants, leaching of gold ores. Cyanide recovery and destruction processes. Metal purification and recovery processes such as SX, IX and EW. Rheology of ore slurries and tailings.
  • Geometallurgy
Process optimization modeling and simulation, geostatistics, variability testing, flowsheet development, automated process mineralogy, mill design and virtual production planning, production forecasting, process simulation and optimization, benchmarking.
  • High Definition Mineralogy
Mineralogical identification, petrographic analysis and textural studies. Process mineralogy (predictive metallurgy from and ore mineralogy), liberation and deportment studies. Mineral particle sizing. Environmental mineralogy (waste rock studies, contaminant and tailings characterization).
  • Diamond Exploration Services
Indicator mineral recovery, micro diamond recovery by caustic dissolution, processing of bulk samples for commercial diamond recovery, and diamond grading and classification. Electron microprobe analysis of diamond indicator minerals and associated data analysis. Bulk sample processing by ore concentration in 1t/hr or 10t/hr dense media separation plants, followed by diamond recovery by grease tabling and SORTEX™.
  • In-Plant Audits and Debottlenecking
Operating plant audits, troubleshooting, de-bottlenecking, improvement of process efficiencies, process control, metallurgical plant commissioning, on-site pilot plants, training, routine assistance.
  • Advanced Expert Systems
Needs analyses. Design and implementation of expert systems through the use of MinnovEX Expert Technology (MET). Incorporation of control technology such as neural networks, generic algorithms and statistical process control (SPC). Instrumentation audits, selection, procurement, configuration and integration.
  • Complex Integrated Pilot Plant Operations
Plant design, assembly, commissioning, troubleshooting and operation. Mineral processing, leaching, metal purification, SX-EW, circuit optimization, distributed control systems, data analysis.

Operational Placement Opportunities
Young engineers can also gain experience in non-technical and operational areas of:

Finance
Project management related budgeting, accounting, purchasing, and receiving.

Customer Service
Proposal writing, client management, time management, and sales techniques.

Project Management
Scope determination, staff and equipment scheduling, project costing, data handling, and report writing.

Health, Safety and Environment
Hazard and equipment operability assessments, environmental reviews, safe work practices, and waste disposal.

Quality Systems and Accreditation
Data evaluation and validation, ISO 17025 and/or 9002 protocols, SOP creation and use, data management and IT (distributed control systems, and online analysis).

Work Environment
It is our policy to provide and ensure a safe working environment, coupled with training that provides our employees with the opportunity to grow professionally, and provides the information necessary to carry out their assigned duties safely. SGS recognizes that the well being of our employees is critical to the company’s success.

Opportunity to Travel
As part of the program, you may also have the opportunity to complete the training program at other locations within SGS Minerals Services. This could provide you with opportunities to travel internationally and learn different systems and cultures.
