Geologist

Primary Responsibilities
The Geologist will conduct exploration programs and research to extend the knowledge of the structure, composition and processes of earth sciences generally, and to locate and identify hydrocarbon and mineral resources. You will also plan and implement programs of hydrocarbon and mineral extraction to assess and mitigate the effects of development and waste disposal projects on the environment.

Specific responsibilities
The Geologist will perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Conducts theoretical and applied research to extend knowledge of surface and subsurface features of the earth and the operation of physical and chemical systems.
  • Participates in geological, geochemical and geophysical field studies and geological testing programs.
  • Directs seismic, electromagnetic, magnetic, gravimetric, radiometric, radar and other remote sensing programs.
  • Conducts analysis of geological, geochemical and geophysical survey data and other test results.
  • Develops applied software for the analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Participates in the analysis of core samples, drill cuttings and rock samples to identify chemical, mineral, and hydrocarbon composition to assess depositional environments and geological age.
  • Assess the size, orientation and composition of mineral ore bodies and hydrocarbon deposits.
  • Recommends the acquisition of lands, exploration and mapping programs and mine development.
  • Conducts geological and geophysical studies for regional development, site selection and the development of public works projects.
  • May supervise and co-ordinate mining activities.

Reporting to
Project Manager

Skills

  • A university degree in geology, mineralogy, environmental mineralogy, soil science or materials analysis at the Masters or Honours Bachelors level is required.
  • Registration as a Professional Geologist is not a requirement for employment but may be requested upon successful candidacy.
