The Opportunity, The Experience and the Expectations |
New Graduate in Training
Your First 12 Months |
New graduates begin their career experience at SGS learning the basic technical and operational aspects of our business. This phase of a graduates development will be very ‘hands on’, supplemented by occasional classroom training sessions on the theory of various metallurgical processes, taught by experienced colleagues. Graduates spend up to 6 months in each of the 4 main technical groups (grinding, flotation, gold processing and hydrometallurgy), where they will be partnered with an experienced staff member to learn and perform a variety of technical tasks specific to those groups. Graduates will assist metallurgists, project managers and technologists in laboratory, sample preparation, and pilot plant environments. These building blocks are essential to a graduate’s success later in their career. Graduates will also become familiar with SGS Canada’s culture and all of our company’s policies -- with a strong emphasis on health and safety in the workplace, and environmental compliance, to ensure graduates are comfortable and knowledgeable in their new work surroundings. New recruits spend their first 12 months in this career phase, depending on their breadth of experience and individual performance. |
Metallurgist in Training
Months 12-24 |
This phase of the SGS Career Path allows graduates to continue building on what they have already learned and apply their experience progressively and more independently. Graduates continue to be mentored throughout this stage of their development, and will be called upon to compile and analyze data, as well as draft and prepare substantial portions of reports for clients. Graduates are expected to use their initiative and judgment frequently, and may provide guidance to more junior laboratory personnel, as well as assume shift-leading responsibilities in SGS operations, depending on their level of achievement in this early stage of their career. New recruits will continue to rotate between the 4 main technical groups (grinding, flotation, gold processing and hydrometallurgy), and will spend most of their time conducting hands on laboratory and pilot plant operations, supplemented by occasional classroom training sessions. Graduates typically enter this phase of their Career Path after 12 or more months of development, though exceptional candidates may gain the experience and demonstrate the ability to move to this stage earlier. |
Metallurgist
24 to 48 Months |
Depending on individual performance, SGS anticipates that graduates can attain the experience to take on this responsibility after their first one to two years with SGS. Graduates will be assigned to one of the technical groups (grinding, flotation, gold processing or hydrometallurgy) depending on their preference and aptitude, and will become responsible for the management of small projects of variable scope and complexity in that group. This will include preparation of proposals, scheduling of test work, supervision of team members working on the project, verifying and reporting results, as well as financial management of the project. Graduates may also represent the company with clients and engage in business development. Graduates will provide advice to peers and technologists and may have part-time supervisory responsibilities for technical staff. Graduates may be called upon to travel to one of our other metallurgical laboratories in Canada or overseas, either for short term assignments to help on specific projects, or for longer term as part of a strategic initiative. This is a significant step in graduates professional development at SGS – but certainly not the end of their Career Path, but rather just the beginning! |
